Know Your System
Mini-splits are efficient and quiet, but they are not maintenance-free. These are the four things that most often determine how long a ductless system lasts.
Every indoor head has a blower wheel that gradually collects dust and biological growth. Because the head sits in your living space, that buildup is what people notice as a musty smell when the unit starts. Cleaning it is a service task, not a filter change.
Indoor heads drain condensate through a line that runs to the outside. When that line clogs, water backs up and comes out of the bottom of the head onto your wall. It is one of the most common ductless service calls and one of the easiest to prevent.
A multi-zone system lets each room hold its own setpoint, which is the main reason people choose ductless. It also means a fault can affect one zone while the others keep working normally, so tell us exactly which heads are misbehaving.
Ductless compressors ramp up and down rather than cycling fully on and off. That is why a mini-split runs quietly for long stretches instead of starting and stopping, and why the electronics driving it need a technician familiar with the equipment.
