Heat pump complaints often sound alarming and turn out to be normal behavior, or sound normal and turn out to be a real fault. Here is how we sort them:
Know Your System
Four things separate heat pump work from ordinary furnace and air conditioner work. They are also the four places most heat pump problems begin.
This is the component that lets one system both heat and cool by changing the direction refrigerant flows. When it sticks, the system gets locked into one mode, which is why a heat pump can cool perfectly and refuse to heat at all.
In cold weather the outdoor coil collects frost, and the system periodically reverses to melt it off. Steam rising off the unit is normal. Persistent ice, or a defrost cycle that runs constantly, is not.
When outdoor temperatures fall far enough, a heat pump needs help. How that supplemental heat is configured determines both your winter comfort and your January electric bill, which is why we plan it during installation rather than after.
An air conditioner rests all winter and a furnace rests all summer. A heat pump never really gets a break, so we recommend a visit in spring and another in fall rather than a single annual tune-up.
